In ceramics, the four elements- earth, water, air and fire- are fundamental to the creation process
Earth provides the clay, water shapes it, air allows it to dry, and fire solidifies it. These elements are not just ingredients but also represent the core processes involved in ceramics.
Fire
Raku pieces are fired at lower temperatures than traditional pottery and are rapidly removed from the kiln while glowing hot.
The hot pieces are placed in a container with combustibles (like sawdust or newspaper) to create a reduction atmosphere. This process starves the clay and glaze of oxygen, leading to unique colourations and crackling.
